The Power of Perseverance: Colm Dillane's Creative Journey
In a captivating evening at Rizzoli, Colm Dillane, the mastermind behind KidSuper, shared his extraordinary journey, leaving a packed audience in awe. Initially, the event was billed as a conversation, but Dillane took center stage solo, captivating everyone with stories and excerpts from his book, "The Misadventures of KidSuper."
This illustrated autobiography takes readers on a journey from Dillane's humble beginnings selling T-shirts in high school to his triumphant fashion shows in New York and Paris. But here's where it gets controversial: Dillane's path to success was far from conventional.
Growing up, Dillane moved frequently, a total of seven times between the ages of 3 and 12. This constant movement left him without friends when his family finally settled in New York. Determined to change this, he embarked on a creative mission, making T-shirts and forging connections with like-minded individuals at school. Clothing became his catalyst, igniting an obsession with fashion.
After high school, Dillane took a gap year to pursue his love for soccer in Brazil. While he realized his talent wasn't enough to make a living as a professional athlete, he gained a valuable life lesson. The experience in Brazil made him realize that his 'Plan B' was someone else's 'Plan A', fueling his motivation upon returning to New York.
Dillane enrolled at NYU to study mathematics, but his passion project, KidSuper, was always on the side. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to turn his dorm into a store, selling his collection, which ultimately resulted in his eviction. Undeterred, he found a space in Brooklyn, combining living and selling his new line.
However, the challenge remained: no one was shopping there. So, Dillane pivoted, transforming the space into a creative hub with a recording studio, photo studio, and a sewing machine. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Dillane's mathematical background proved to be an unexpected asset. When negotiating brand deals, his unique appearance and demeanor often led to skepticism, but revealing his NYU math degree changed the game. It served as a reminder that creativity and business acumen can coexist.
In 2019, Dillane set his sights on Paris, aiming to hold a fashion show. He detailed the challenges in his book's first chapter, "Bull in a China Shop." Despite the hurdles, including an over-budget location and convincing his parents to walk the runway, the show garnered attention. A Vogue editor's review titled "KidSuper Is the Breakout Surprise of Men's Paris Fashion Week" seemed like a breakthrough.
But here's the twist: it didn't immediately lead to overnight success. Dillane shared, "My life changed zero. I was so unknown that an article didn't matter." Yet, he persevered, and today, KidSuper is a staple at Paris Fashion Week, with collaborations ranging from Puma and Tommy Hilfiger to Mattel and Bape. Dillane even served as a guest designer for Louis Vuitton menswear.
In his words to his fans at Rizzoli, Dillane emphasized the importance of perseverance. "You have to keep going and keep your head down." His unwavering determination, even while studying math at NYU, showcases the power of seeing projects through.
And this is the part most people miss: success often comes from a combination of creativity, resilience, and an unwavering belief in oneself. Dillane's story is a testament to the idea that with persistence, even the most challenging paths can lead to remarkable destinations.
