As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, 2025, European markets opened with a mixed bag of emotions and performances. This final trading day of the year saw a unique blend of gains and losses across various sectors.
A Tale of Two Markets: Defense Soars, Miners Tumble
In London, the pan-European Stoxx 600 index opened on a slightly negative note, down 0.1%. However, the U.K.'s FTSE index showed resilience, trading just under 0.1% higher. Meanwhile, France's CAC 40 and Germany's DAX experienced declines of 0.3% and 0.6%, respectively, with Italy's FTSE MIB bucking the trend and gaining 1.1%.
But here's where it gets interesting: defense stocks were on a roll, continuing their upward trajectory for the second consecutive day. Companies like Saab, Renk, and Rheinmetall witnessed impressive gains of 2% to 3% shortly after market open.
On the other hand, mining stocks, which had been top performers the previous day, took a hit. London-listed Fresnillo, for instance, saw a significant drop of 3.5%, following a 6% jump on Tuesday. Other mining giants like Anglo American, Antofagasta, and Glencore, which had risen by around 3% each in the previous session, managed to avoid any major pullbacks on Wednesday morning.
Precious metals, gold, and silver, were also under the spotlight during this holiday-shortened trading week. Silver futures retreated by a substantial 8.1%, while gold futures dropped 1.1% in early trading.
And this is the part most people miss: the U.S. stock futures were relatively unchanged on Tuesday night, as Wall Street prepared for the last day of 2025. In contrast, Asia-Pacific stocks fell overnight, with markets in Hong Kong and Australia closing early for the holidays, while Japan and South Korea remained shut for the day.
With no major data releases in Europe on Wednesday, the markets will operate on a half-day schedule, closing on Thursday for the New Year's Day holiday, and reopening on Friday.
