In a significant move in the NHL, the Calgary Flames are trading defenseman Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights, according to insider Darren Dreger from TSN. This trade not only marks a pivotal moment for both teams but also raises questions about player contracts and team strategies.
In exchange for Andersson, the Flames will receive defenseman Zach Whitecloud, a first-round pick in 2027 that is protected for the top-10, a second-round draft pick in 2028, and promising prospect Abram Wiebe. Andersson, aged 29, is currently enjoying a productive season with 10 goals and 30 points in 48 games, averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch, this right-handed shooter is in the final year of a six-year contract worth $27.3 million. The Flames drafted him 53rd overall in 2015, and throughout his career, he has accumulated 57 goals and 261 points in 584 games. Furthermore, Andersson is set to represent Sweden in the upcoming Milano Cortina Olympics in February, adding to his impressive international experience, which includes serving as captain at the 2025 World Hockey Championship where he led his team to a bronze medal.
On the flip side, Whitecloud, also 29, has played 48 games this season for the Golden Knights, contributing two goals and seven points while logging an average of 18 minutes and 46 seconds of ice time. The Brandon, Manitoba native has a championship title under his belt, having won the Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023, and has participated in 368 career games, netting 23 goals and accumulating 78 points throughout his eight seasons in the NHL.
Additionally, 22-year-old Abram Wiebe, a seventh-round draft pick by the Flames in 2022, is currently in his junior year at the University of North Dakota. He has recorded three goals and 11 assists over 24 games this season, showcasing his potential as a developing player within the Flames organization.
