The video game industry is in crisis, and workers are fighting back. A powerful protest took place at the 2025 Game Awards, an event that celebrates the best in gaming, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the industry's deep-rooted issues.
In the heart of Los Angeles, amidst the glitz and glamour of the Peacock Theater, a group of passionate individuals stood united. Dressed in bright red shirts, they held signs that spoke volumes: a tombstone for a talent development program, a bold statement declaring 'We're Done Playing', and wanted posters for industry CEOs. This was a protest like no other.
The protesters, members of the United Videogame Workers (UVW), a union representing North American game workers, had a clear message. "Our industry has been exploited," Anna C Webster, the chair of UVW's freelancing committee, declared. "It's time to shed light on the struggles of game workers and hold those in power accountable."
The issues are multifaceted. Over 40,000 layoffs in recent years have shaken the industry to its core. Just last month, RockstarGames, the developers behind Grand Theft Auto, faced accusations of union-busting after firing over 30 employees. The studio denied these claims, but the damage was done. And with AI rapidly infiltrating game development, the future looks uncertain.
Kaitlin "KB" Bonfiglio, the union's local secretary, highlighted the irony: "While the Game Awards showcase the industry's glamor, they ignore the historic layoffs. A three-minute trailer costs over $1 million, yet they turn a blind eye to the workers' plight."
Webster believes the root cause is greed. "The art of gaming is being dismantled to line the pockets of a few. They care not for the games or the art, only the money."
For game workers, the problems are clear. But how do they convey to players that these issues impact their gaming experiences too? Sherveen Uduwana, UVW's treasurer, explains: "Buggy launches, unexpected cancellations - these are all tied to the struggles we face. By protecting workers, ensuring healthcare, and preventing AI replacement, we can create a better gaming industry for everyone."
Despite the challenges, there's an undeniable love for the industry among these protesters. They want to improve the medium they cherish. The Game Awards, while a celebration, also highlights the potential for smaller studios and incredible talent.
Uduwana's message is clear: "Enjoy the awards, but tomorrow, let's fight for better worker rights and a brighter future for gaming. It's a win-win for all."
