A dramatic crash and a title fight twist!
In a thrilling turn of events, Lewis Hamilton's Formula One season ended with a bang (quite literally) as his Ferrari met an untimely demise during the final practice session in Abu Dhabi. But amidst the chaos, George Russell of Mercedes emerged as the hero, denying Lando Norris, the championship leader, a clean sweep of fastest times.
Russell's performance was a mere 0.004 seconds quicker than Norris, a fellow Briton who dominated the previous day at Yas Marina. Despite the close call, Norris remains the fastest title contender.
Here's where it gets controversial: Norris leads Red Bull's Max Verstappen by a comfortable 12 points, with teammate Oscar Piastri a further four points behind. But if Norris finishes in the top three on Sunday, he clinches the championship. However, a fast Mercedes in the mix could throw a wrench in his plans.
And this is the part most people miss: Verstappen, the four-time world champion, was third fastest, just 0.124 seconds off the pace. Piastri, meanwhile, was fifth fastest, trailing behind Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.
The seven-time champion Hamilton's crash brought out the red flags. He spun at turn nine and then collided with the tyre wall, causing significant damage. Over team radio, Hamilton explained, "Something buckled at the front and snapped the rear."
But the drama didn't end there. Norris had to swerve to avoid a slow-moving Red Bull driven by Yuki Tsunoda, who then found himself in a pitlane collision with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli. Both cars sustained damage, and stewards are investigating the incident.
"You told me yes and Tsunoda was coming," Antonelli exclaimed, highlighting the tense moments.
Even Verstappen wasn't spared the drama. He complained about his car's erratic behavior, saying, "I can't keep my feet on the pedals."
So, what do you think? Will Norris secure the championship, or will a fast Mercedes car throw a curveball? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
