UW Receives $10M Donation for AI Research and Emerging Tech (2025)

A groundbreaking $10 million gift is set to revolutionize the University of Washington's approach to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies! This generous contribution from philanthropists Charles and Lisa Simonyi will establish a new initiative, AI@UW, propelling the university to the forefront of AI research and education.

The University of Washington announced this foundational gift on November 18, 2025, signaling a major investment in the future of computing. This initiative aims to solidify the UW's global leadership in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and related fields.

At the heart of this endeavor is the appointment of Noah A. Smith, currently the Amazon Professor of Machine Learning in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, as the vice provost for artificial intelligence. He will also hold the inaugural Charles and Lisa Simonyi Endowed Chair for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies, pending approval from the Board of Regents.

"With this generous gift from Charles and Lisa Simonyi, we will further position the UW as a model for how universities can responsibly and creatively adapt to the age of AI across education, research, administration and governance," stated UW Provost Tricia Serio. This highlights a crucial aspect: the university's commitment to not only advancing AI but also ensuring its responsible implementation across all facets of academia. But here's where it gets interesting...

UW researchers are already recognized worldwide for their deep understanding of AI's potential. This gift will further empower them to create practical and responsible applications that span various academic disciplines, benefit industry, and uplift society.

Charles and Lisa Simonyi, with their long-standing support for the UW, are deeply invested in the university's success. Lisa Simonyi chairs the UW Foundation Board, while Charles Simonyi, a technical fellow at Microsoft and a pioneer in software development, brings invaluable expertise to the table.

"The future of computing, research and innovations is deeply connected to the next era in artificial intelligence and machine learning," the Simonyis said. They believe in the UW's ability to drive transformative discoveries. And this is the part most people miss... The gift will also support an AI governance committee, student scholarships, community engagement, and investments in computing resources and equipment.

"This extraordinary gift from the Simonyis demonstrates their vision and deep trust in the UW’s role as a global leader in innovation,” said UW President Robert J. Jones. The goal is to ensure that AI is developed and applied responsibly, serving humanity and advancing knowledge in ways that reflect shared values.

In the near term, Vice Provost Smith will launch a SEED-AI grant program to fund faculty-led projects that elevate the use of AI in UW educational activities. These grants will support innovative projects designed to explore how AI can enhance learning and teaching across disciplines.

Smith emphasized that the UW will serve as a model for how universities can adapt to the age of AI responsibly and creatively. He is energized by the opportunity to promote AI literacy and steer AI's development in ways that align with the University's mission. Could this be a blueprint for other universities?
