The Winter Olympics 2026 has seen a dramatic turn of events for Team GB's curling team, leaving them on the brink of an early exit. This is a shocking development, especially considering their impressive track record.
GB's curling team, led by Mouat, has consistently dominated the competition, including a notable victory over Canada's Brad Jacobs' team in the last four of the worlds last spring. However, the Canadians were determined to turn the tables and started the match with a bang, taking an early 3-1 lead after three ends.
Despite being considered the world's best, the British team faced a challenging situation. They managed to regain their footing, capitalizing on a slight dip in their opponents' performance, and took a lead with four ends remaining. But fate had other plans, and an unfortunate bounce of the granite stone in the seventh end gave Canada a chance to score three points, which they seized.
Mouat and his team were now in a tight spot, needing to respond urgently. Unfortunately, they couldn't find their rhythm, and instead, conceded a steal, leaving them with a three-point deficit and only two ends left to play.
This deficit proved insurmountable, and now, their hopes of upgrading their silver medal from Beijing are out of their control.
But here's where it gets controversial... Team GB's women's curling team is also facing a perilous situation. They must win all their remaining matches against the United States, Japan, and Italy to have any chance of progressing to the last four.
And this is the part most people miss... Team GB's performance in the two-man bobsleigh event also took a hit. Brakeman Taylor Lawrence had to withdraw from the final two runs due to a calf injury, and was replaced by Leon Greenwood. The team finished 12th overall, a disappointing result for GB's most decorated men's bobsleigh pilot, Brad Hall.
Hall, speaking to BBC Sport, explained the strategy: "It wasn't our initial plan, but with Leon stepping in at the last minute, we wanted to ensure Taylor was fit and ready for the four-man event. We knew we were out of contention for the two-man, so we used it as extra training for the upcoming four-man event."
The four-man bobsleigh event begins on Saturday, with the medal-deciding runs taking place on Sunday. Will Team GB be able to bounce back and secure their place in the medals? Only time will tell.
